Food and drinks

Breakfast

Bobby Boy Bakeshop
A great variety of delicious baked goods. It may be busy, but if you go to the 845 S Poplar St location, you’ll have better luck with shorter lines.

Louie and Honey’s Kitchen
Great for scones and cinnamon rolls specifically. There’s also a small, cute shop downstairs if you want some North Carolina-specific goods.

Krankie’s Coffee
Chicken and biscuits with vegetarian options as well. Probably the best option for a non-bakery breakfast!

Lunch/Dinner

What Da Pho
A very cute, and very good Vietnamese, family-run spot. On the ground floor of an office building, it’s a wonderful surprise and a great recommendation from Katherine’s therapist!

Timmy’s Hot Chicken
Very good chicken sandwiches, strips, and spicy challenges. Obviously, they have vegetarian options as well.

Finnegan’s Wake
A classic Irish pub with a friendly staff and good food to boot!

Sushi Sho
The best sushi we’ve had in town. What else needs to be said.

Mozelle’s
If you want ambiance, this is probably the best we’ve visited in town. The food is okay, but a great spot if you want a table at a Winston institution.

Activities

Culture

North Carolina Museum of Art
Biggest art museum in town. Not outstanding, but not bad.

Aperture Cinema
Our favorite independent theater with pretty uncomfortable seats!

Kaleideum
Children’s museum and science center. We’ve never been, but our neighbors with kids go all the time.

History

Reynolda Village
Art, gardens, shopping and dining. We walk the trail every month; it holds a dear spot in both of our hearts.

Old Salem
Historic neighborhood and home to The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) where Katherine worked in the summer of 2025.

Outdoor

Hanging Rock State Park
9,011-acre state park with a great variety of hiking trails. This park is roughly 45 minutes north of Winston-Salem by car, but (speaking from experience) is a lovely day trip. On the way back, make sure to stop at Waffle House for a delicious post hike meal.

Salem Lake
A peaceful 7-mile loop trail around the lake located in east Winston-Salem.
